The second largest contiguous forest area in the country lies on the border of Friesland and Drenthe. In the Drents-Friese Wold you wander from sand drifts to fens, from heather to marshes. Standing in the drifting Aekingerzand you don't even need much imagination to imagine what the vast sandy plain of Drenthe must have looked like in the past. In the sopping wet swamp area Aekingerbroek you stand at the origin of the Vledder Aa, which has recently been allowed to flow freely again. 5000 years ago, farmers were already living on the border of Friesland and Drenthe. They laid out their fields on high ground and made them fertile with heather sods and manure from their sheep. As a result, the fields became higher and higher. Walk or cycle through the Drents-Friese Wold and you will still recognize the typical esdorpen landscape: convex fields around the villages and stream valleys full of blooming flowers. The Drents-Friese Wold is not only large, it is also great in beauty.
