Nature and surroundings
Nature reserve De Borkeld consists of young forest, large moors, loam pits, fields, grasslands and even a piece of raised bog. The forest was planted between 1930 and 1950. Here you will also find the largest juniper thicket in the Netherlands. The terrain is sloping: the highest peak, the Friezenberg lies at forty meters, the lowest point at thirteen meters above sea level. Several trails marked with posts have been set out by the Forestry Commission. The Borkeld is also an archaeological reserve. 13,000 years ago hunter-gatherers were already active here. Evidence was left by them in the form of stone axes, skin scrapers and other stone tools. The prehistoric burial mounds and settlement sites that have been found are between 6,000 and 4,000 years old. In 1997, a dozen burial mounds were restored by the National Service for Archaeological Research. The clay pits in the area were created by clay mining for making brick. They are five or more meters deep, and the specific conditions have created a special plant community. As early as the 18th century, a "tile factory" was located here whose products were in great demand in Twente. The A1 freeway was built through the area in the 1970s. At the insistence of conservationists, the special natural value of the juniper field was taken into account. This is recognizable by a bend in the road south of Rijssen.

What hospitable owners and a cozy little cottage. When we arrived, a delicious nut tart was waiting for us; everyone we interacted with was friendly, and the whole atmosphere felt very relaxed. There was plenty of privacy, even though you’re staying in the front part of the house. The decor takes you back to grandma’s day, which we found very charming. Absolutely everything is provided: towels, magazines, dish soap, a blanket for the dog, sunshades, and mosquito screens. The only things you need to bring yourself are your food (including spices, oil, salt, and pepper—those aren’t provided) and, most importantly (in the owner’s words), a good attitude. We managed that just fine—we had a wonderful week together with our dog (who loved the fenced-in yard, as you can see in the photos). All in all, highly recommended!
It’s wonderfully peaceful there. The immediate area is great for walking and biking, and you hardly run into anyone else. Boating in an electric boat on the Regge (boarding at the charming Molke vacation park) was the highlight of our week. There are several half-hour walks you can take with the dog right from the cottage.

Nothing is perfect but the cottage is complete, even the beds are made on arrival, towels are more than enough and kitchen linen is also provided. The hospitality of the landlord is super. A 10 plus!

From the cottage you can walk right into nature. Only now not everywhere because the bird nesting area tjj during the breeding season is closed. Only good. Enough nature about what is accessible.

Cozy cottage with old-fashioned furnishings, clean.
Knus huisje met ouderwetse inrichting, schoon.
Totally unexpectedly ended up here on a Friday night, also caught the owners off guard but we came into a cozy cottage, felt welcome.
