This property is located on the border of Salland, Twente and the Achterhoek. The area was formed in the Ice Age and offers a range of hilly terrain, forests, water and agriculture. In the early Middle Ages, this area was booming economically. When Amsterdam was still a village, the city of Deventer already enjoyed high international prestige. Together with other Hanseatic cities such as Doesburg, Zutphen, Zwolle and Kampen, Deventer formed the economic artery of the Low Countries. Historically, therefore, many features can be recognized here, including the line of defense against the lords of Gelderland. The castles Arkelsteijn, Waardenborgh and Swormertoren were established by squire Jan van Arkel in 1361 (see further Castle Arkelstein-Wikipedia). Arkelsteijn Castle was one of the larger castles in the Low Countries at the time.
