The Bargerveen nature reserve is nearby, and you can enjoy endless walking and biking in the forests of Drenthe or across the Drenthe heath. The Bargerveen International Nature Reserve is a stunning area that has been returned to nature following peat extraction—a paradise for hundreds of species of birds and butterflies. It is part of Naturpark Moor, a vast nature reserve in the border region offering recreational activities such as the peatland park, boat rides on the Snikke, the Narrow-Gauge Railway Museum, and the Peatland Hiking Center. The Börkener Paradies is a small nature reserve on the banks of the Ems River just across the border—this is what the Netherlands looked like in the Middle Ages! And, for example, at the Hunebed Center, you can learn about the origins of hunebeds and where to find them in Drenthe. And then there’s Wildlands, the zoo in Nordhorn, art trails, an international sculpture garden, galleries, museums, excellent restaurants, and a wonderful sauna. Germany is just a stone’s throw away.
