Flora and fauna

Land of mountains and sea, rivers and hills, that of the Marche is a region rich in types of vegetation and extremely different fauna. A rather diversified flora based on exposure to the sea and altitude, in a territory that over the centuries has undergone profound changes at the hands of man, who has shaped the plains, hilly ridges and mountain slopes to improve and extend agricultural and breeding activities, also partly modifying the habitat of some animals which, if in the past they left these places, today, thanks to repopulation and protection actions, are returning to spread in the region.

The highly agricultural vocation of the population has meant that the most wooded areas are located in the mountain areas(above 800 meters high) and the most fitting example of the vegetation that covered the hilly belt of the Marche until 1700 is today represented by the Selva of the State Natural Reserve of the Abbey of Fiastra in whose plain wood the Turkey oak prevails, accompanied by downy oak, ash and field maple. Over the centuries, human intervention has introduced numerous other plant species, and today we can admire chestnut, oak and beech woods that alternate with holm oaks, hornbeams and hollies(but also firs and birches, especially in the Monti della Laga) on whose branches green woodpeckers, nightingales, jays, blackbirds, wrens and robins nest, while the undergrowth is the best refuge for hares and squirrels, but also foxes and stone martens, weasels, porcupines and badgers.

At the edges of the wooded areas broom, gentian, iris, orchids and wild rose often grow, while the presence of black citiso and thorn oak is rare; moreover, in the clearings intended for grazing, it often happens to meet leafy groups of beech trees under whose shade the flocks seek refreshment in the hottest season.

On the Sibillini Mountains it is possible to observe many interesting plant species, such as the martagon lily, the precious Edelweiss of the Apennines, the genepì and the bearberry, and it is here that even today rare animals live, such as the wolf, the marten, the wild cat, the snow vole and the roe deer, while the sky is furrowed by the flights of golden eagles, peregrine falcons and alpine finches. It is also necessary to mention the presence of Marchesoni's Chirocephalus, an invertebrate that lives only in Lake Pilato, protected for millennia by the mysterious Sibyl. Always on the Sibillini, in the meadows of Ragnolo, it is possible to observe splendid blooms of orchids, lilies and other interesting species such as the narcissus or the alpine star.

The river areas represent the best habitat for the red and wicker willow, the white willow, the black poplar and the white poplar; there are many reeds and other species that love humidity, hops and whiteweed among which numerous species of birds winter and nest night herons, splendid gray herons and spoonbills and egrets.

Approaching the sea, the Marche vegetation is dominated by the Mediterranean scrub with woods of holm oak, laurel, black hornbeam, downy oak and maple, while the sunniest areas are full of bushes of ash, strawberry tree, mastic and Mediterranean honeysuckle. These are the favorite places for the passage and nesting of numerous species of birds, which also include the pale swift and the great swift. The rich and varied landscape of the Marches therefore offers ever-changing views, fully stimulating the interest and love for nature of both scholars and those who curiously walk the many paths of this region.

Resorts

One of the leading resorts in the region is the city located on the Adriatic coast, which has amazingly beautiful landscapes. A tiny town located on a hill, with a population of no more than three hundred people, belongs to the city of Gabicce Mare. Another popular resort in the region, Fano, is located 50km away. It is renowned for its historic landmarks and excellent beachfront conditions, which combine to create an attractive explosive mix for most travel enthusiasts. The gorgeous Spiaggia di Veltuto beach stretches along the shores of Seniggalia, and a little further is the San Benedetto del Tronto area, famous for its many nightclubs and a multi-kilometer palm avenue.

There are several other notable beach destinations between Fano and San Benedetto, including Portonovo, Siroglio, Pedazo and Porto Recanati. The resort also enjoys special attention from tourists, intended for those seeking peace and solitude. In addition to the beach program, vacationers are given the opportunity to go from here on a sightseeing bus to the ancient Urbino, invariably attracting lovers of antiquities and artifacts. In the central part of the Adriatic coast, there is a coastal town - Numana, which has been awarded the Blue Flag several times for its clean beaches and high ecology. There is the picturesque Conero National Park, with the mountain of the same name and a harsh rocky coast, the images of which are repeatedly found on advertising brochures dedicated to this resort.

Attractions and entertainment

The main architectural objects of the region are located in Loreto, Fano and Urbino, although there are also many interesting places in other cities of the region. Arc de Triomphe of Trajan, National Museum of the Marche, Cathedral on the Hill of Guasco, Pinacoteca Comunale(Ancona), Palace of the Dukes of Urbino, majestic Porta Valbona, monument to Raphael Sanci(Urbino), Basilica of Santa Casa, Palazzo Comunale(San Loreto), Church -Paterniano and the Palazzo Montevecchio(Fano) are only a small part of the historical and cultural heritage that the Marche has. Pesaro is known for its many festivals and exhibitions held annually in this ancient city. The main natural attraction of the region is the famous Frasassi Caves. In general, the flora and fauna of these lands is extremely rich, and a trip to the local national parks and reserves is accompanied by a lot of pleasant emotions and positive impressions.

The Marche is a real discovery for lovers of various natural landscapes, man-made and miraculous beauties, which are concentrated on an area of slightly less than 10,000 square meters. It is a region with a thousand guises and colors: yellow sunflower fields, green hills and parks, red traditions, folklore and culture and, finally, blue - the rich color of the sea, lakes and rivers.

A whopping 180 kilometers of coastline with 26 beach resorts, stunning beaches, picturesque bays, 9 tourist ports and 18 blue flags that guarantee the quality of services and water. In this region, you can choose a beach with the finest sand, pebbles or rocky coast, with palm trees or cliffs. The variety of beach landscapes allows for many sports. The inland part of the region is distinguished by a landscape of exceptional beauty, which is formed by green and golden hills with patches of forests and meadows, harmoniously alternating with neat wheat fields and olive groves.

Climate

Today, this region is considered perhaps the most picturesque and vibrant in Italy, which is largely due not to such a massive tourist dominance in relation to other regions of the country, as well as a mild and even climate that favorably affects the natural resources of the region. The total number of sunny days exceeds 200, and the average air temperature in the summer months is about +27 degrees, in winter it drops to +7 - +10. You can visit these places at any time of the year, depending on your preferences, since in winter and summer, the local nature abounds in bright colors.
