Most countries have done the impossible to try and preserve some wild natural areas on their territories, which you can visit year-round.

The wild side of Europe

The Scandinavian countries, mostly due to their climate, have vast wild territories scattered all around the peninsula. For example, the Urho Kekkonen National Park of Finland is known as a wilderness paradise. There are many clean lakes and dense forests, and you can be sure that no human has stepped foot in some parts of this park. A combination of fells and forest vegetation has created a thick cover for even the largest pathways through the park, thus creating a sense of solitude and peace like no other.

Another enchanting place to visit are the Eisriesenwelt caves in Austria. This is the largest accessible cave network in the world (more than 40 km long) and is Austrian folklore deems this place as the gate to hell. The caves are the true definition of a wild destination and provide an unforgettable experience of walking on wooden pathways through frozen waterfalls and cave formations.

A short trip away from Nice in France, there is a great place for spending time outdoors, which offers a much-needed rest from the busy streets of Nice. Mercantour National Park is incredibly rich in its biodiversity – nearly ½ of the plants found in the country can be found here. The landscape itself is a distinctive combination of natural sites. There are pastures and forests, as well as the typical Alpine 3,000m high peaks.

Activities

Group activities are always fun and more fun means more energy! The Mercantour park offers a possibility for the brave – a 10 km hike which ends at the rock carvings in Vallée des Merveilles. This trekking experience is one of a lifetime and totally worth it; also, get prepared to meet many animals along your way up to the rocks.

A great group bonding activity is rafting. Europe has many rivers on which whitewater rafting is possible, however undoubtedly the most beautiful place to do it is the upper part of the river Verdon in the Verdon Gorge, also known as the Grand Canyon of Europe. Combine great adrenaline with great views and group memories.
