The island

One of the most popular summer destinations in Europe - Sardinia, attracts tourists with long and high raggy coastline with sandy beaches and crystal clear blue waters. The climate is favorable throughout the year, with mild winters and very hot summers. In the summer months, the temperature often goes above 40 °C. Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean after Siciliy. The two Italian islands are almost the same size - around 25 000 km², which is at least six times bigger than the Spanish island of Mallorca. Sardinia has four provinces and one metropolitan city - the capital Cagliari, where you can find large numbers of flamingos. The island also encompasses many smaller islands like Asinara, the Maddalena group and San Pietro. In Italy, Sardinia is the leading region in the production of cheese and sheep in goat raising.

Flora and fauna

You’ll be surprised by the flora and fauna in Sardinia, it’s one of the things that make the island so special. The air conditions that are usually associated with hay fever are missing in Sardinia, which is perfect for anyone with allergies. The biggest attraction for tourists who love the animal kingdom are the Rosa Flamingos. Flamingos can be observed in the North and South, but the Southern Sardinia is where there is an abundance of them. Other interesting animals  you can find on the island are turtles, lizards and the mouflon. Agriculture plays an important role in Sardinia, so there are many farmlands with sheep, goats, horses and donkeys. As for the flora, there are many cacti on the islands. They bloom in spring and make the land exceptionally beautiful. Being the biggest producer of cork in the whole world, Sardinia is filled with cork trees. Other plants to be found on the islands are myrtle, eucalyptus and oak trees, citrus fruits and of course a large number of Mediterranean herbs of all kinds. The cultural traditions in Sardinia are divided between the north and south, and it’s notable how these differences are transferred in their vegetation too.
