Horto do Amor is a restored loft apartment on a living organic farm in Carril, 5 km from the historic town of Tomar. The loft sits within 2,000 m² of biodiverse gardens, orchards and vegetable beds cultivated on syntropic agroforestry principles: everything grows without chemicals, in harmony with birds, bees and our friendly farm animals, including Sasha the dog and two cats. Guests enjoy a private garden, hammock, bicycles, a projector for film nights and welcoming hosts who love sharing the rhythms of farm life. Pets are warmly welcome; there is space to roam, sniff and rest under the trees. Breakfast can include eggs, fruit and preserves from the farm itself. Explore Tomar's UNESCO Convent of Christ, swim in the Castelo do Bode lake, walk quiet country lanes, or simply do nothing among the flowers. Horto do Amor is a place to slow down, breathe deeply and reconnect with nature, the way holidays used to feel.
Nature and surroundings
The farm lies in the gentle hills of the Ribatejo, where olive groves, cork oaks and pine woods roll toward the Nabão valley. Our own 2,000 m² garden is a small ecosystem in itself: fruit trees, flowering hedges, vegetable beds and wild corners managed on organic and syntropic principles. Birdsong is the soundtrack here; expect hoopoes, golden orioles and owls at dusk, with butterflies and bees working the garden by day. Five minutes away, Tomar offers riverside walks beneath the UNESCO-listed Convent of Christ. Within twenty minutes you reach the Castelo do Bode reservoir, one of Portugal's cleanest lakes, ideal for swimming, kayaking and forest walks along its shores. The Almourol castle rises from an island in the Tagus nearby, and the limestone hills of the Serras de Aire e Candeeiros, with their caves and fossil trackways, make an easy day trip. This is quiet, authentic central Portugal: dark night skies, birdsong mornings and space to breathe.
