The landscapes and nature in Belgium

Belgium is home to astonishing landscapes that can be discovered by food and by bike. The Ardennes is a picturesque region with rolling hills and dense forests. This landscape is dissected by many rivers and thrashing streams, creating a variety of narrow valleys. Just imagine the different vistas of every season - the lively green spring, sunny summer, warm autumn, and snowy white winter. The Ardennes are astonishing at any time of the year! Wake your senses with a leisure stroll in the countryside, or follow one of the naturalistic paths going through the forest. It’s so quiet and relaxing, you probably won’t even meet a single soul! And while the Ardennes is probably a top destination for many travellers, the Flanders region can offer just as much for the nature lovers, if not more! It’s impressive that almost 700 hectares of the land is classified as Belgium nature reserves. This protected area makes up for “over a thousand football fields”. In the nature reserve High Venn you are able to find one of the most pristine stretches of land in the country. Thanks to strong climate, rainfall, and long winters, the region is home to a selection of rare plant species. Beside that there’s still wildlife that walks around here. You might even spot a lynx, wild boar or red deer. If you're up for a real adventure, book one of our micro camping sites in Belgium. You can bring your own camping home and stay on the private area of one of our landlords.

What to do when you’re staying in nature?

Belgium is home to diverse nature, making it suitable for a wide range of activities. What about a challenging hike, a mountain bike tour, or a visit to one of Belgium’s picturesque towns and villages? With its hilly landscape and vast unspoiled nature, the region of the Ardennes is perfect for all of those. This is the place to go for outdoor adventures that don’t require going to extremely high mountain peaks. Popular sports are rafting, rock climbing, hiking. One of the best ways to discover the astonishing landscapes of the Ardennes is by bike. The region has an extensive cycling network, and you can rent a bike almost anywhere. It’s also the only place in Belgium where you can go skiing! The biggest resort is located in the province of Luxembourg. There you can enjoy 2km of ski slopes and the highest ski piste in Belgium - 650m. Still, skiing in Belgium is also possible in the indoor ski resorts! And if you’ve chosen Belgium for your summer beach holiday, then go to the region of West Flanders. This is where the only Belgium coastline is located. Book one of our cottages and find a place where you can truly respite from city life. Take romantic walks on the beach, enjoy the sun and the sea, and bring your dog with you if you wish! Just make sure you pick one of our pet-friendly accommodations. Other activities in water that can add to your relaxing experience are boat sailing, fishing, swimming.

For all nature lovers, we have some ideas about the places to visit and explore nature. You have the Hallerbos forest that is only 20km away from Brussels. If you’re planning your Easter holiday in Belgium, visiting the forest is a must. April is the month when the wood hyacinth bloom blossoms to create a lovely violet carpet all over the woodlands. It’s the best place in the world to observe this amazing landscape. The Sonian forest, also located in close proximity to Brussels, is another favourite places of the nature enthusiast. The forest has a special selection of trees like the beech, oak, pristine birch, maple, and the ash tree. When you’re walking through the forest pay attention to the mushrooms growing on the trees - you might stumble upon some remarkable fungi formations! Do you also love birds? Then visit the Het Zwin nature park, also called the “International Airport for Migratory Birds”. At any time of the year you can visit the park and observe the cormorant, curlew, oystercatcher, redshank, greylag goose, even the white stork! This bird airport is a paradise for bird enthusiasts, but in fact any nature lover will appreciate the place. The diverse landscapes harbour a wide variety of animals and plants. Except for birds, you can meet tree frogs, marsh rabbits, sheep, cattle and koniks.

Wondering when to book a holiday in Belgium? Here’s some advice:

Thanks to the small size of the country, the weather in Belgium is regular and not that surprising. The climate is generally mild throughout the year without any extremes. Belgium has sunny, rainy, warm, and cold days in any of the four seasons. This moderate weather makes it a perfect destination all year around. Still, the spring and autumn landscapes probably remain most beautiful of all. Are you planning a Christmas holiday? We should assure you that you’ll be able to enjoy the snow. In the same time, the winter temperatures usually stay around or just below zero, with the coldest average temperature of 2.3°C in February. Any outdoor activities are still possible as long as you’re prepared with some warm clothes! Of course, you should skip rafting in the Ardennes, and choose hiking or skiing instead. Belgium doesn’t get too hot in the spring and summer. The hottest months are July and August, with average temperatures of 18°C. It’s also the busiest time of the year with the highest number of tourists. But then again, when you book your accommodation with us you’ll be safely situated away from the crowds. Choose between villas, cabins, apartments, and more!
