Flevoland is the youngest province in the Netherlands and was created after the reclamation of part of the former Zuiderzee, now called the IJsselmeer and Markermeer. Almost the entire boundary of the province consists of ponds such as the Eemmeer and the Markermeer. The water here is never far away from your holiday home! Ideal for those who want to relax on holiday and want to get a breath of fresh air on the many dikes.
Flora and fauna
Flevoland is characterized by large open spaces and a tightly divided landscape with lots of agricultural land. In addition to these agricultural areas and the villages and towns that are present, there are a number of nature reserves, which are often owned by the Forestry Commission. The Oostvaardersplassen is by far the most famous nature reserve in Flevoland, which is due to a popular Dutch nature film shot here. Many birds know where to find this nature reserve as a marshland and wintering area. Another part of the area, the dry part, is the habitat of several large grazers, such as red deer, horses and cattle. Due to the legal protection the Oostvaardersplassen are only accessible to a limited number of visitors.
Activities
The possible activities that you can undertake from your holiday home are mainly concentrated in the towns and villages and on and around the many waters. Excursions are regularly organised through the various nature reserves, where a guide will be happy to explain to you about the flora, fauna and sights that you will encounter along the way. These can be walking excursions, but also cycling or sailing excursions. So you can go all over the place! At the northern and southern borders of the province there are many water sports and recreation possibilities, for example on the IJsselmeer, Ketelmeer, Veluwemeer or Gooimeer. On the road with the kids? Then the Walibi amusement park or the nearby Dolfinarium are the answer.
