Although spring and summer tend to be a more popular season to visit Europe, winter here undoubtedly is remarkably beautiful and deserves your attention and time. Moreover, there are more than 400 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Europe and the list keeps on growing. You are able to choose among different geographical locations based on your personal preference – a mountainous or a valley region, close to a river or even in a dense forest area.

Winter nature in Europe

How can we even mention winter without talking about Finland? The land of the Suomi is famous for three main reasons – water resources, Lapland and the Northern Lights. Urho Kekkonen National Park is the place where you can enjoy all of this. This national park is one of the oldest protected areas in Finland, it is situated in Lapland and is a favorite destination for exploring the Suomi wilderness and to watch the night sky with Aurora Borealis.

A mountain range is situated a bit more central in Europe and is one of the most beautiful winter sights that you will probably ever see. The Dolomites is the northern part of the Italian Alps, which will take your breath away with its scary high peaks and vertical cliffs, hanging above one of the most famous roads in Europe. If you happen to choose the Dolomites as your destination, don’t miss Lake Braies – a captivating glacier lake, situated high in the mountain. The scenery is exceptionally beautiful in the winter period.

Activities during the winter

If you are a skier, you cannot skip the winter resorts in Europe – Switzerland, Austria, and Germany are among the most popular destinations, however not many people know that in fact countries such as Spain also have ski resorts. Lapland is a place of great adventure for the whole family - experience a real Christmas adventure at Santa Claus’ village, meet lots of reindeer and enjoy the priceless landscape of snowy woods.

Abisko National park in Sweden is also a place where you can immerse yourself in the beautiful subarctic nature. The more interesting part however is the chance to learn more about the Swedish culture, while interacting with Sami communities and taking part in some of their traditions. Scotland is an unexpected winter destination! It might seem like a calm place, but across the peaceful never-ending green fields, you can try various adrenaline-boosting activities. For example, you can go surfing in early winter, or try canoeing along the coast. There are 5 ski resorts all in Scotland and you can enjoy those, too.
