Find outstanding nature in the park
There are 7 mountains in the park, each of them with an altitude above 2,000m. Of them, Marsicano Mountain is the most popular one, although it is not the highest. It is surrounded by a few valleys, all of which are very beautiful and provide amazing sceneries of Monte Greco – the highest peak. This mountain is also the home to some of the most beautiful animals you can meet on this latitude in Italy – the Marsican brown bear, the Apennine wolf, golden eagles, as well as many deer and otters.
In the heart of the Abruzzo National Park you will encounter a nature reserve – Camosciara. This is the most famous part of the park where numerous chamois live. The route to the reserve is an amazing adventure by itself, but when you actually arrive you will be amazed at the wild beauty of this place. The reserve appears to be surrounded by the Apennines Mountains from all sides as if nature made sure to protect it.
Soak in the Italian nature and culture
As the Apennine wolf is one of the animals associated with the area, there is an interesting exhibition about its life. Museo del Lupo Appenninico is located in the little town of Civitella Alfedena. The museum is dedicated to the history and the legends revolving around this distinctive animal species.
There are a few little towns and villages which you can visit to immerse in the traditional Italian countryside culture. Such towns are Barrea and Alfedena. Villeta Barrea is a medieval village which overlooks an artificial lake of the same name. The lake is the largest in the park and was created after a dam was built on the Sangro River. Alfedena is another picturesque village where you can learn more about the history of the region during medieval times. There is also a castle and an octagonal tower dating from the 10th century.
