Nature and surroundings
Madeira has long been a popular vacation spot for nature lovers. Many tourists return on a regular basis. The island has a pleasant climate all year round, particularly beautiful floral displays and virtually no crime, making it one of the safest places on earth today, where you can still walk around carefree. It is a paradise for hikers. The irrigation system goes through artificially created canals (levadas), these have a total length of 2150 kilometers. The hiking trails for the most part run along the levadas. It is an excellent way to see the beautiful landscape of Madeira. There are easy, medium and difficult walks to do. The village is in a beautiful location in an area of farmland, vineyards and gardens. Calheta means "little beach" in Portuguese. The village is one of the oldest parishes on the island and was founded in June 1502 by the primitive colonials. In the middle of the village is an old sugar cane factory from 1901 where they produce honey and 'aguardente' rum using old steam machines. The village is also famous for the huge variety of fish caught along this coast. The landlord recommends a boat trip, where there is a good chance of seeing whales and dolphins. It is also beautiful to see Madeira from the sea.
