Campania nature - landscapes, flora and fauna

Campania has a marvelous jagged coastline that uncovers scenic landscapes. But the region is much more than just a coastal land. Did you know that Campania is the Italian region with the most national and regional parks and reserves? They make up almost a third of all land. Italy is home to 100 WWF Oasis that help protect places and its rich ecosystems, and 12 of those are located namely in Campania. You can visit the Bosco San Silvestro in the San Leucio area and take long walks through the evergreen forest. The flora there consists mainly of holm oak and Mediterranean scrub. Actually, one third of the land in Campania is woodlands, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to take walks through the forests. Other Oases that are interesting to visit are the Astroni crater in Naples - an extinct volcano, and The Bussento Caves at Morigerati, if you’re curious to explore the karst caves along the Bussento river. As a whole, Campania is a great place to discover the variety of the Mediterranean and Apennine flora. It’s also known for its volcanic arc, consisting of a number of active, dormant, and extinct volcanoes. This includes one of the most dangerous volcanoes worldwide, Mount Vesuvius.

As for the animal life, Campania has a rich population of different bird species (150 in the Persano Oasis alone), while the consistency of mammals is relatively limited. The Oases of Lake Campolattaro that hosts a colony of herons, and Lake Conza being an important migratory route, are the perfect place for bird watching. The Oasis of Persano is home to the rarest terrestrial mammal in Italy  - the otter, which is also the icon for the place. In most places you can find foxes, boars, weasels, hedgehogs, moles, the cute marten, and if you’re more interested in reptiles, you can stumble upon a few kinds of lizards and snakes. See? The rich wildlife of Campania make it a perfect destination for nature lovers and active travellers.
